Towing Center Consoles and Bay Boats on the Southeast Coast

Tow ratings, payload, hitch packages and brake controllers for six Ram, Jeep and Dodge models, plus the saltwater habits that keep a truck and trailer alive.

2027 Ram 2500

From the Chesapeake Bay down through the Outer Banks sounds, the Lowcountry, the Georgia marshes and the Florida Keys, the Southeast is boat country. Center consoles, bay boats and flats skiffs sit on trailers in driveways from Annapolis to Key West, and most of them get pulled to a ramp by an SUV or pickup that was never really sized for the job. This guide lines up what six Ram, Jeep and Dodge models can handle, and what the hitch and brake hardware costs.

Start with the whole boat, not the brochure weight

A boat's listed weight is usually a dry figure. The number that matters at the ramp is the loaded total: hull, engine, fuel, batteries, bait tanks, coolers, ice, gear and the trailer itself. Weigh the whole rig on a public scale if you can. Then compare it against the tow rating of your truck, with a margin.

Payload is the other limit people forget. Part of the trailer's weight presses down on the hitch, and that tongue weight counts against payload alongside passengers and anything in the bed. A truck can sit within its tow rating and still be overloaded on payload.

The comparison

Model Tow rating Payload Hitch or tow package listed
Ram 1500 up to 11,530 lbs (Hurricane SO); 8,100 (V6) up to 2,340 lbs (V6); 1,880 (Hurricane SO) Towing Technology Group $595; Trailer Tow Group II $1,095
Ram 2500 up to 17,740 lbs (6.4L HEMI); 20,000 (diesel) up to 4,580 lbs with $835 Payload Upgrade; 3,990 (diesel) Towing Technology Group $1,595 to $2,395 by trim; Tow Technology Plus $895 to $1,490
Jeep Gladiator up to 7,700 lbs (Sport S, 4.10 axle); 4,500 (Sahara) up to 1,720 lbs Trailer Tow and Auxiliary Switch Group $995
Jeep Grand Cherokee 6,200 lbs 1,050 to 1,280 lbs (two-row); 1,210 to 1,400 (L) Trailer-Tow Package $995
Dodge Durango 7,200 lbs; 8,700 with Tow 'n Go about 1,350 lbs (GT) Tow 'n Go Package $6,295 on GT trims
Jeep Grand Wagoneer up to 10,000 lbs (4x4, 3.92 axle); 9,860 (L) 1,300 lbs (estimate) Heavy-Duty Trailer-Tow Package $1,195 base, $1,995 on higher trims

These are manufacturer ratings for properly equipped vehicles, and the exact figure depends on engine, axle, cab and options. The 2500 ratings are preliminary. Confirm the number on the specific vehicle's towing chart and door-jamb sticker. Prices are before destination and change.

Ram 1500 and 2500: the pickup answer

A Ram 1500 with the standard-output Hurricane six has the rating for many mid-size trailered boats, with room in the bed for gear. The catch is payload. The Hurricane's 1,880 pounds is lower than the V6's 2,340, so a family, a full cooler and tongue weight can add up faster than you think.

Pickup buyers hauling larger boats, or towing long distances to the Keys or the Gulf side, move up to the Ram 2500. Its 6.4-liter HEMI is rated up to 17,740 pounds and the Cummins diesel to 20,000, with payload at 4,580 pounds on the HEMI with the Payload Upgrade Package. Ram also lists a tow-mode digital rearview mirror package at $1,135 on most trims, a useful tool when a tall console boat blocks the mirror view. Trailer reverse steering control comes in the Tow Technology Plus group.

Gladiator, Grand Cherokee, Durango and Grand Wagoneer

The Gladiator suits smaller boats, such as a flats skiff or a compact bay boat. Its rating varies a lot by trim, from 7,700 pounds on the Sport S down to 4,500 on the Sahara, so read the trim sheet. Its Class IV receiver hitch comes in a $995 group.

The Grand Cherokee tows 6,200 pounds with either engine. Jeep's $995 Trailer-Tow Package adds a Class IV hitch, Trailer-Hitch Zoom, a full-size spare and a 180-amp alternator. That fits a lighter bay boat on a single-axle trailer, but check the weight.

The Durango's 8,700-pound rating needs the Tow 'n Go Package, which costs $6,295 and bundles a Class IV hitch, trailer brake controller, tow drive mode and blind-spot monitoring with trailer detection. It is a large jump in price, but it covers the hitch, the brake controller and trailer-aware blind-spot monitoring in one package.

The Grand Wagoneer is the family-hauler of the group. At 10,000 pounds its rating suits a larger boat and trailer, and it seats seven or eight. Jeep's Heavy-Duty Trailer-Tow Package includes trailer-brake control, trailer tire pressure monitoring, trailer light monitoring and blind-spot monitoring with trailer detection.

Brakes and electronics

Anything with a brake-equipped trailer needs a way to control those brakes from the cab. Ram's Trailer Tow Group II includes a trailer brake controller, trailer tire pressure monitoring and trailer reverse steering control. The Durango and Grand Wagoneer packages include theirs. On the Gladiator and Grand Cherokee packages, a brake controller isn't listed, so ask whether one is fitted or needs to be added. Surge brakes on many boat trailers don't need a controller, but electric brakes do.

Trailer-hitch zoom and reverse guidance help line up the ball and the coupler, a bigger deal at a crowded ramp.

Saltwater habits that save a truck

Corrosion is the real long-term enemy. After every saltwater trip:

  • Rinse the trailer's frame, lights, springs, hubs and hitch with fresh water, and flush the brakes if your trailer has a flush kit.
  • Rinse the truck's underbody, wheel wells and receiver hitch, not just the paint.
  • Dry electrical connectors and check the trailer plug for green corrosion.
  • Check wheel bearings and tire pressures, particularly before a long trip.

Do not submerge hot hubs. Let them cool before backing in, because water drawn into a hot bearing is a quick path to failure. Back the trailer in only as far as needed, and keep the truck's wheels on dry or damp concrete when possible.

Ramps, tides and traction

Public ramps from Maryland's Eastern Shore to the Florida Keys can be slick with algae and sand. Four-wheel drive helps. The Gladiator comes with 4x4 on every trim, the Durango with all-wheel drive, and the Ram 1500 and 2500 come in 4x2 or 4x4. Grand Cherokee 4x4 is standard on Limited Reserve, Summit and Trailhawk, and optional below those. Low tide exposes steeper, slimier surfaces, and cold mornings in the Chesapeake region make a wet ramp worse.

Take it slow, keep a spotter at the dock, and keep a set of wheel chocks in the truck. Neither a tow rating nor a hitch package replaces patience at the ramp.
