Ram camera packages explained

Ram sells more than a dozen camera options, and the names don't make it obvious which ones include a camera and which only add wiring or a mirror. This guide decodes each option code, so you can read a window sticker or build sheet and know what a truck on a Southeastern lot can actually show you.

Which option do you need?

You want

A live view behind the trailer in the rearview mirror

Order the Tow Mode Camera (XH7) with the truck, on top of HD Towing Technology Plus (AVS) or Limited Level 1 (A69). If you don't want those packages, Digital Rearview Mirror with Tow Mode (AVF) bundles the mirror and camera. XH7 can't be added later through Mopar.

You want

A bird's-eye view around the truck

The 360° Surround View Camera (XAK). It's standard on the 1500 Tungsten and comes in packages such as the Advanced Safety Group, Tow Technology Group and Limited Level 1.

You want

A bird's-eye view around the trailer too

On a 2500 or 3500, the Trailer 360° Surround View Camera (XN1) adds four cameras that mount on the trailer. The truck must also have XAK.

You want

A cheap trailer camera you can add later

Make sure the truck has trailer camera wiring (XFQ, or a package that includes it, such as XAK, AAN or A69) and the 8.4- or 12-inch screen. Then a dealer can fit the Mopar Trailer Side Camera Kit (82216068AB). Its view shows on the touchscreen, not continuously in the mirror.

You want

To watch a fifth-wheel or gooseneck hitch

The cargo-view camera in the third brake light (LPD) shows the bed on the touchscreen. It's included in the Tow Technology Group on a Big Horn HD and in Limited Level 1.

Every camera option code

“HD” means the Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups. Codes and package contents change between model years, so check the window sticker or build sheet of the truck you're considering.

Things that catch buyers out

Ram camera questions

Does the Ram 360° Surround View Camera include a trailer camera?

No. Its five cameras are all on the truck. On a 2500 or 3500 it does include the wiring for a trailer camera, and it's required for the Trailer 360° Surround View Camera (XN1).

What's the difference between XFQ and XH7?

XFQ is wiring only, for up to two auxiliary cameras whose picture shows on the touchscreen temporarily. XH7 is a camera that shows the view behind the trailer continuously in the Digital Rearview Mirror; it's factory order only.

Can I add a Tow Mode Camera to my Ram after buying it?

Not the factory Tow Mode Camera (XH7): it isn't sold through Mopar. A dealer can add the Mopar Trailer Side Camera Kit (82216068AB) if the truck has trailer camera wiring and the 8.4- or 12-inch Uconnect screen, but it displays on the touchscreen rather than in the mirror.

Is a backup camera standard on every Ram?

Yes, on the 1500, 2500/3500 and ProMaster. On the Chassis Cab it ships loose for the upfitter to mount, and on a gas 2500/3500 ordered without a bed it also ships loose.

Which Ram camera package is best for towing a travel trailer?

If you want to see behind the trailer while driving, get the Tow Mode Camera (XH7) with AVS or A69, or the AVF package. The Tow Technology Group (AAN) adds the 360° camera, cargo camera, trailer reverse guidance and trailer-tow mirrors, plus the wiring for a trailer camera.
